Scandinavian design began in the early 1900’s but gained wider recognition (and approval) in the 1950’s. The goal of this design movement is simple… to design beautiful, minimalistic pieces that are as wonderful to use as they are to look at.
They also sought to design pieces that could be mass produced as cheaply as possible without sacrificing quality. With strong “post-modern” ideals, the Scandinavian designers looked for ways to make their designs affordable for all… not just the wealthy and influential.
Scandinavian Design really flourished between 1951-1970 as a result of the “Lunning Prize.” The Lunning Prize was created to acknowledge excellence in…
While Muuto is a Danish company, its name comes from the Finnish word, “muutos,” which can be translated to mean “fresh perspective” (or change).
Muuto handpicks from the very best Nordic designers and challenges them to come up with a design that embodies the essence of Modern Scandinavian Design… something aesthetically pleasing and perfectly functional (and in keeping with Mutto’s mission… something fresh!)
Many top Scandinavian designers like, Harri Koskinen, Ole Jensen, Louise Campbell, Norway Says (among many others) have designed for Muuto and more are accepting the challenge.

One of the most interesting young Scandinavian designers today is Johan Lindstén from Sweden. He participates in Stockholm Design Week this week, which is an exhibition under the name Check In 10, which refers to the 10 young designers who are “checked in” and exhibits at Hotel Birger Jarl in Stockholm.
Johan Lindsténs design is conceptual in style, and is based on an interpretation of an ancient occupation, embroidery. Under the name Dream about an idyllic place… Johan Lindstén has made a series of chairs where the upholstered backrest of the chairs all have a wonderful embroidered scene sewn on. In this way he gives historical and cultural narratives on each chair.
While Scandinavian design is often a byword for minamalism, the colorful work of illustrator Sanna Annukka is awash with folkloric maidens and towering palaces reminiscent of fairy-tale lands. This Finnish artist states that much of her art stems from summertime expeditions to Lapland, where the long white nights and forest encounters with deer and elks made a lasting impression. “The bold shapes and detailing all reflect the simple beauty of Finland”, she explains.
Sanna’s newest wooden Soul Birds: In Karelia there was an ancient belief in the Sielulintu or Soul bird. The Sielulintu was thought to deliver the…
The career of Swedish Designer, Maria Holmer Dahlgren, began at the internationally-renowned Swedish stationary company, Ordning & Reda. Maria co-founded Ordning & Reda and designed for them for 18 years. Other achievements include being commissioned to design the interior graphics for Stockholm’s stylish boutique hotel “Rival,” owned by ABBA’s Benny Andersson.
Maria now has her own thriving design company, Metagram. She designs a variety of contemporary trays and other pieces aimed at the high-end tourist market, and currently sells them in places such as Stockholm’s “Moderna Museet” gallery.
Of her work, Maria says…
“…There’s beautiful art all around us, if we just open our eyes to it.”
We couldn’t agree more and know you love Maria’s designs and the quality of her products.
Salt & Syrup was started by Emily Ranneby, an American illustrator and designer living in Stockholm, Sweden. Emily is a newcomer to the stationery market, but seems to be rolling on strong momentum as her work is popping up on blogs and in magazines. Her letter-pressed cards are mini art pieces and would fit in a frame as easily as they do envelopes. In her debut collection Emily combines images of wildlife creatures and each card features an unexpected combination of the subject’s name in Swedish, French, and English. This unexpected grouping adds another level of distinctive flair to each set.
Salt & Syrup cards are appealing to both children and adults with their use of bright colors.…
Brikolör, a new furniture design studio in Göteberg, launched its first collection at SaloneSatellite in Milan this year. The furniture, especially the pieces in pale colours and untreated wood, may have a calming effect, but Brikolör has strong ambition. Victor Alm, Fredrik Hansson, Mathias Eriksson and Sami Kallio, from left to right above, intend on manufacturing furniture that will last 300 years, from both a technical and emotional standpoint. This young company aims to leave a lasting impression.
Brikolör produces furniture with durability. That means that they age with dignity, keeping their inner qualities even as time goes by and changes the surface of the product. According to the group, they are searching for a sort of quality within. Or, you could say that they are trying to…
