One of the most interesting young Scandinavian designers today is Johan Lindstén from Sweden. He participates in Stockholm Design Week this week, which is an exhibition under the name Check In 10, which refers to the 10 young designers who are “checked in” and exhibits at Hotel Birger Jarl in Stockholm.

Johan Lindsténs design is conceptual in style, and is based on an interpretation of an ancient occupation, embroidery. Under the name Dream about an idyllic place… Johan Lindstén has made a series of chairs where the upholstered backrest of the chairs all have a wonderful embroidered scene sewn on. In this way he gives historical and cultural…

Salt & Syrup was started by Emily Ranneby, an American illustrator and designer living in Stockholm, Sweden. Emily is a newcomer to the stationery market, but seems to be rolling on strong momentum as her work is popping up on blogs and in magazines. Her letter-pressed cards are mini art pieces and would fit in a frame as easily as they do envelopes. In her debut collection Emily combines images of wildlife creatures and each card features an unexpected combination of the subject’s name in Swedish, French, and English. This unexpected grouping adds another level of distinctive flair to each set.

Salt & Syrup cards are appealing to…

Brikolör, a new furniture design studio in Göteberg, launched its first collection at SaloneSatellite in Milan this year. The furniture, especially the pieces in pale colours and untreated wood, may have a calming effect, but Brikolör has strong ambition. Victor Alm, Fredrik Hansson, Mathias Eriksson and Sami Kallio, from left to right above, intend on manufacturing furniture that will last 300 years, from both a technical and emotional standpoint. This young company aims to leave a lasting impression.

Brikolör produces furniture with durability. That means that they age with dignity, keeping their inner qualities even as time goes by and changes the surface of the product. According to the group, they are searching for a sort of quality…

Sanna Anukka is one of my favorite illustrators. Her iconographic imagery is beautiful and creative, with sky-high design sensibility. Tapping into elements of folklore and fairy tales, Sanna Annukka has really carved out a unique, patented style that is all her own, and each new piece as stunning and marvelous as the last.

Sanna Annukka is a young and talented British born illustrator, whose designs have been making waves in the design world. With a mother from Finland and a father from the UK, Annukka spent much of her childhood split in both countries. Heavily influenced by Finnish folklore, specifically the national epic, The Kalevala, many of Annukka’s prints depict different scenes from The…

Hanna Werning is one of the most successful Swedish designers at the moment, and it’s easy to see why. Her patterns, made out of plants and animals, are impossible not to like. Recently Hanna has teamed up with Boråstapeter to create a new collection of wallpaper. She says ” My new wallpaper collection London was a challenge, like writing a second book,” But she isn’t just satisfied with creating something new. Hanna wants to change our way of looking at things. She wants to surprise. The inspiration for the new wallpaper comes from London. Cascades of water and light spectra have been filled with the colour of the streetlife and an ethnic mix of fragrances, symbols and impressions. The…

Internationally acclaimed Danish designer Rikke Hagen won the prestigious iF Award in 2007 for the lamp Steam for Holmegaard. But her new line of products titled ‘Pipeline’ take her much further than just being one of Denmark’s leading glass designers. Hagen is now merging materials like steel, leather and porcelain into her new products saying, “I am fascinated by how the materials interact and work together . . . as when the smooth and the rough meet, they demonstrate how the difference is in the detail.”
The Pipeline series consists of a teapot, set of bowls, glasses, a milk jug and a decanter. Hagen stresses the importance of products that are relevant and applicable in our daily lives…

Cathrine Kullberg lives in Oslo, Norway and has had her studio, Cathrine Kullberg Lighting, since 2006. It was there that she created the lovely lamp series Norwegian Forest in 2007.
Cathrine’s educational mix of political science, arts, history, design and architecture, was topped up with a Masters Degree at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London in 2000. An inspiring guest lecture by the London based designer Thomas Heatherwich brought her to the studio, where she was employed as project designer and project manager. Back in Oslo she continued as project leader at Norsk Form, Norwegian Centre of Design, Architectural and The Built Environment. Other work experience includes freelance journalism in design and architecture magazines and…
