Copenhagen Fashion Week 2010

As you may (or may not) know, I’m currently in Sweden. I’m here looking for new products to carry at Huset and to take a little holiday as well.

While I will be attending a variety of shows, I’m especially looking forward to Copenhagen Fashion Week which runs from August 11th-15th.

The event kicks off by highlighting creations by Copenhagen-based designer Ole Yde. Ole is the dressmaker to royals and has designed for the Crown Princess amongst others.
His collection portrays a dreamlike vision of the feminine form and will be displayed along the almost mile-long (1.6 km.) outdoor catwalk. The catwalk stretches between City Hall and Kongens Nytorv and is currently the world’s longest catwalk.

While attending, I will be shopping for new brands (and lines) to carry on the site and many will not be available anywhere else in the U.S. I will also be taking photos and videos so I can share the experience with you on the blog soon.

Triwa’s New Hot Miami Collection!

Yummy is all we can say about the new hot summer colors coming our way from Swedish watch sensation Triwa!

Triwa presents their upcoming colorful and elaborate Miami Deco watch collection. The collection is available in two models, with five colorways to each model, and the introduction of a brighter theme from what we’ve seen in the past from Triwa. As usual, you can expect top-notch functionality and durability of a Triwa watch with an added vibrant tone.

Recently Elle Sweden had Princess Madeleine on the cover wearing the Rose Gold Chronograph which Huset will be carrying in the coming weeks. Triwa has taken Sweden by storm and now huset (the only retailer in the U.S. to carry them), will be receiving these wonderfully fun and bright new styles. Do you recognize this Victoria’s Secret Angel?

She’s wearing another one of our favorites soon to hit the shop, the Greystone Chrono.

Happy Easter!

Easter has a number of things in common with Chrsitmas in Sweden. Easter cards are sent, Easter decorations are hung up and homes are decorated with little chicks, hens and roosters.

The home glows with yellow, which is so typical for Easter. There is no tree to decorate but people do put up Easter branches decorated with feathers in vibrant colors.

And of course we can’t forget the eggs! In Sweden children are given eggs made of paper that can be opened and filled with candy. Food plays a central role in most Swedish festivities and Easter is no exception. Lamb is eaten on Easter (which is what we’re having), some herring, eggs and maybe a little schnapps.

Something a little unique in Sweden is that the children dress up like Easter witches, with brooms, coffee post, cats and scarves on their heads. It’s a tradition that has a dark history, but no one thinks about it, when you see these adorable children going door to door asking for Easter candy.

I hope you all get a lot of rest, good food and fun during the holiday with your friends and family. I’ll leave you with these happy Easter photos.

Odd Molly L.A.!

The grand opening of the US Odd Molly flagship store opened to much fan fair in Beverly Hills on the 19th of this month. Fashionistas, gorgeous actresses and an assorted group of young beautiful Hollywood types were rampant at the Flagship Odd Molly opening. The store is located on trendy Robertson Boulevard. Timed to be part of the festivities for Fashion Week LA, the Odd Molly store opening was hosted by Supermodel Helena Christensen for Odd Molly co-founders and designers Per Holknekt, Karin Jimfelt-Ghatan, Christina Tillman and Christer Andersson.

The party lured a roster of young hip Hollywood celebrities including Malin Akerman, Mena Suvari, Lake Bell, Catt Sadler, Lydia Hearst, Brett Anderson, Lily Collins, Tara Subkoff, Izabella Miko, Danny Houston, Kelly Osbourne, Mini Anden and all the Swedish Hollywood Wives (a very popular reality show in Sweden). The presence of Heidi Klum, grand mahatma of fashion, supermodel and star, gave the opening real cache. Check out Malin Akerman in her lovely Sumthing Dress!

Six young models stood at the epicenter of the Odd Molly party on an elevated platform, layered in Odd Molly clothing and fingerless gloves. Stunning actress Natasha Henstridge was there to get a closer look as was super sweet Kate Mara. And if you look ever so closely you will see me in the background behind Danish uber actor Mads Mikkelsen. It was a great night, and the after party wasn’t bad either!

Johan Linsten shows at Stockholm’s Design Week

One of the most interesting young Scandinavian designers today is Johan Lindstén from Sweden. He participates in Stockholm Design Week this week, which is an exhibition under the name Check In 10, which refers to the 10 young designers who are “checked in” and exhibits at Hotel Birger Jarl in Stockholm.

Johan Lindsténs design is conceptual in style, and is based on an interpretation of an ancient occupation, embroidery. Under the name Dream about an idyllic place… Johan Lindstén has made a series of chairs where the upholstered backrest of the chairs all have a wonderful embroidered scene sewn on. In this way he gives historical and cultural narratives on each chair.

Many hours, many days, many weeks and years have women in older generations spent on embroidery to catch the typical Swedish idyll. Many with dreams to be a part of that life with a nice little red cottage close to the water and Bambi watching over us.

These stitches and dreams are for most people forgotten and thrown away to an eternal lost never to been appreciated. This furniture’s destiny is to elevate and promote these neglected pieces of art, bring back a long lost sentimental value and mix it with contemporary ecstatic from Johan Lindstén´s vision.

News from Stockholm Furniture Fair

RVW is a new Swedish furniture manufacturer founded by designers Jonas Nordgren and Johannes Herbertsson who grew tired of the fast paced design business and decided to take matters into their own hands. RVW stands for consistency and condemns trends and hype in order to produce furniture that has no expiration date.
Based in Malmö in the southern part of Sweden, RVW works closely with suppliers in the Öresund region and Småland to produce their furniture. Besides breathing life in local artisanship, they also pay homage to Scandinavias design heritage.?“We see it as something self-explanatory to continue on the Scandinavian design heritage and to produce something specific from the library of materials, ideas and forms crafted over centuries,” says Johannes Herbertsson.

“Things are finding their own pace now and we are working in close contact with our suppliers. Producing something that’s more than a throwaway takes time. There are so many logos and slogans about sustainability or local production, but to communicate expression or comfort is more delicate: if someone has to tell you how to enjoy a furniture or artwork, then it is not a good piece of art,” says Jonas Nordgren.

RVW will be showing their wares all week long at Stockholm’s Furniture Fair.

We just returned from Stockholm’s Formex Gift show, and what a whirlwind trip is was! Just a few days to see all the new items offered for Spring, as well as meeting some of our vendors and making new connections too.

The theme for this years Formex show was Creative Flow, and according to designer Jan Rundgren, who created the main exhibition”Creative Spaces”, is summed up by: “Studio trends are precisely with the times, the individualistic style feels like one of the most powerful things at the moment. We’re looking for something unique in both objects and expressions. The spaces are bohemian, spontaneously decorated and show that a creative process is taking place” Jan’s exhibition space uses both space and light, and the catch phrase is “functional beauty”.

On display at the Formex show as well, was the exhibition “Handmade Crafts selcted by Formex and K.H.V.C- Konsthantverscentrum”. There were several vignette’s which had wonderful displays of handmade items. This all points to a movement all over Europe and the U.S. for a return back to what’s natural and handmade. We love this idea that you can take something “traditional” turn it on it’s head and make something new and unique that is unprocessed, natural, simple and handmade.

The exhibition focuses on handicraft products unique to the Nordic region. The design items conveyed a bit of their own history as well as a glimpse of the future. “The exhibition is based on things that have been made by hand. The focus is on the power of the hand, the physical and the beautiful. But it’s not just about beautiful things, there is also humor, folklore and colorfulness, such as crocheted messages and embroidered stories. The craftmanship embordies both pleasure and attitude”, say Synnöve Mork, the exhibition curator.

We were quite pleased to see that Design Sponge featured five of our products in their newest “2009 Gift Guide” for items costing $25 or less.

Of course, we have many other fine products they didn’t list… like Almedahls Tea Towels, Odd Molly’s “My Lips Love Me Lip Balm,” “My Hands Love Me Handcream” and “My Dream Lather Soap Bar” but still, we were thrilled to see that five of our products (out of 50) were counted among the best holiday gifts for 2009.

Some Creative Ladies From Norway

Norway has always had a strong tradition of crafts and workmanship but has been overshadowed in design by its Scandinavian neighbors. In a bid to save these old-time skills, the country has spawned a new generation of artisans who are producing some exquisite products in small batches. Here are a few of our favorite ladies.

Glassware is an old Norwegian industry that has faded away, but with these hypnotically beautiful pieces from Anne Haavind taking inspiration from the Norwegian landscape, we think the industry may be on the rebound

Kjersti Johannessen has a similar glacial touch to her striking glass pieces.

Ceramics is also coming on strong with blazing white porcelain absolute minimal products from Sara Skotte.

And quaint traditional Elfin designs from Wik & Walsoe.

Combining traditional wooden veneer production with skilled local craftsmen and delightful designs are Cathrine Kullberg’s lighting lampshades. From small tablelamps to Grand Hall installations Cathrine’s work has found its way into becoming a statement of new-traditional Norwegian design.
