We just returned from Stockholm’s Formex Gift show, and what a whirlwind trip is was! Just a few days to see all the new items offered for Spring, as well as meeting some of our vendors and making new connections too.
formex7
The theme for this years Formex show was Creative Flow, and according to designer Jan Rundgren, who created the main exhibition”Creative Spaces”, is summed up by: “Studio trends are precisely with the times, the individualistic style feels like one of the most powerful things at the moment. We’re looking for something unique in both objects and expressions. The spaces are bohemian, spontaneously decorated and show that a…

Designer Anders Arhøj from design studio Venom Yum, and ceramist Louise Gaarmann, co-founder of LYNfabrikken.dk, have collaborated on a reusable ceramic series where they give discarded cups new life by decorating them with graphics from Alice in Wonderland.

We think Alice in Wonderland is an exciting whimsical universe which includes a tea party and many other fun things. Anders has designed and drawn all the characters, and by a special technique, transferred the motives to the ceramics.

Finnish lines, Sanna Annukka’s prints are wonderful!

While Scandinavian design is often a byword for minamalism, the colorful work of illustrator Sanna Annukka is awash with folkloric maidens and towering palaces reminiscent of fairy-tale lands. This Finnish artist states that much of her art stems from summertime expeditions to Lapland, where the long white nights and forest encounters with deer and elks made a lasting impression. “The bold shapes and detailing all reflect the simple beauty of Finland”, she explains.

Some Creative Ladies From Norway

Norway has always had a strong tradition of crafts and workmanship but has been overshadowed in design by its Scandinavian neighbors. In a bid to save these old-time skills, the country has spawned a new generation of artisans who are producing some exquisite products in small batches. Here are a few of our favorite ladies.

Glassware is an old Norwegian industry that has faded away, but with these hypnotically beautiful pieces from Anne Haavind taking inspiration from the Norwegian landscape, we think the industry may be on the rebound

Heima Candlestick by Normann Copenhagen

Minimalist, Nordic design – Normann Copenhagen presents the Heima candlestick.

According to Nordic mythology Heima means home or the world, but Heima is also the name behind the new candlestick from Normann Copenhagen. Heima, designed by Francis Cayouette, is a four-armed candlestick made of cast iron in a minimalist, Nordic design.

Inspired by the Nordic culture for living flames and the cast iron arts and craft movement of the 1950s, the French-Canadian Francis Cayouette has interpreted the classic candlestick. The result is a candlestick featuring a recognisable design that pays tribute to industrial craftsmanship and Nordic traditions. The uneven, almost cold surface gives the Heima candlestick character, while the rounded shapes make the design modern.

Maybe you have seen this already, the Blow away vase by Swedish design group Front. They made the vase by digitalizing and transforming a Royal Delft vase to simulate that it was blown away in the wind. We love how they take iconic pieces and mix it up new, to create something so fun.

Lotta Kühlhorn, it’s all good!

Swedish designer Lotta Kühlhorn is one of our favorite designers, we like that she draws inspiration from root vegetables and that there are always lots of colors. Recently Lotta has designed five new fabric patterns for IKEA, which will be available in stores from Oct 1. The new patterns are called Annamoa, and were inspired by different environments around Sweden, both in Stockholm and the beautiful mountains up north. I love these fabrics, so vibrant and fun. Lotta Kühlhorn has those beautiful tea towels and cutting boards available at our store. Check her out here: http://www.huset-shop.com/lotta-kuhlhorn-radish-tea-towels-p-839.html
