Storyastic DEK Scandinavian Designed Playing Cards
Every DEK employs the rich, impeccable design of a specific locale’s unique aesthetic in our diverse world. Each DEK’s name is a word in the country’s native language which embodies the personality of local life.
DEK • døgn (pronounced “DOG-n”) is a Norwegian word. It means the day plus the night (all 24 hours). In English, saying “I worked all day” likely means you only worked during daylight hours. Or, if you say, “I stayed up all night,” it’s possible you napped the next day. But, if you say “I worked a whole døgn,” or “I stayed up a whole døgn,” that’s saying something more remarkable.
Norway’s northern location makes for 18 hour winter nights, and 19 hour summer days. Pitch black and bright white. This døgn DEK has an entirely new original design, with the hearts and diamonds card faces in bright white, and the spades and clubs card faces in pitch black.
DEK • lykke (pronounced “LUKE-uh”) is a Danish word. Denmark conjures visions of vikings, and when visiting Denmark, one can indeed sense the historical and spiritual home of these legendary warriors, craftsmen, and traders.
Design details in this Lykke DEK include chess iconography, which was popular in Denmark 1200 years ago in the Viking age.
But Danes are docile, too. “Lykke” translates quite nicely to “happiness,” but to Danes, “Lykke” means finding the good that exists in the world around us every day—even if you are a Viking.
DEK • sisu (pronounced “SEE-sue”) is a Finnish word. It is a stubborn determination and resilience. It means “stick-with-it-ness”—a gritty act of bravery when success seems impossible. This attitude exemplifies the Finns’ national character. As is said by Finns, “Arctic nature has given us guts.”
The sisu DEK’s spare, aggressive yet elegant design aptly depicts this Finnish spirit and instantly transports you to this “land of a thousand lakes,” two-thirds blanketed by thick woodlands, set between the Baltic Sea, its neighboring Scandinavian countries and Russia.
DEK • lagom (pronounced “LAW-gum”) is a Swedish word. There is no exact English word, but "lagom" is about finding a more manageable, comfortable, balanced way of doing things. Loosely translated, it means "not too much and not too little, just right."
It's about essentials. Being clutter-free. This helps you make time for the things that matter most in life. This ethos is heavily ingrained in the Swedish psyche. Put simply, lagom is a lifestyle. The lagom DEK strips away the unnecessary and focuses you on only the essential.
